Easy-to-follow guide to understanding the basics of building a great sound system!

 Start with the source
To understand the basics of sound system design and the purpose of each sound component we need to follow the “signal path.” “Signal path” is simply the path that sound takes from its origin (or source) to when it is heard by your listeners.

Follow the “signal path”
The easiest way to trace signal path is backwards... For a listener to hear the signal, sound must come out of a loudspeaker. That loudspeaker must receive a signal with enough power to drive it (unless it is a powered loudspeaker) from a powered amplifier, or amp. The amp receives a low powered signal from a source, such as a microphone.

A basic sound system
So the minimum required components of a basic sound system are an input device (microphone), amp, and loudspeaker. Early PAs (Public Address systems) were nothing more than this basic system. However, most ministries today require much more.

Customizing your sound system
To expand a basic sound system so that you can add multiple input devices (mics, instruments, a tape and CD deck, etc.) you need a device called a mixer. With the use of a mixer you can select, combine, and process all input source signals (microphones or sounds) to send a final output signal to the amp. The amp then boosts the sound and sends it to the loudspeakers for everyone to hear. This is called the “master mix” or “house mix.”

Every sound source (input device) is like the water source of each stream. The mixer controls the “flow” of each “signal” (or stream). If you don’t want your CD player to be heard while your pastor is preaching, you “cut” the “flow” of the CD player “stream” into the “river” (your master mix).

Record your messages and music
Now that you have great “live” sound for everyone to hear, you’ll want to record (and then distribute) your messages and music on Tape and CD. Virtually every mixer has at least one stereo line in (for playing from a Tape or CD) and stereo line out (for recording to Tape & CD). Make sure you select the right recording deck for your ministry.
