| Audio Tip: Setting your mixer for maximum gain without distortion or feedback
First,
the mixer channel used for the mic should be adjusted first, starting
with the output fader; set this to its marked “unity” or neutral
position (no additional boost or cut).
Next, set the mixer’s master output fader to unity also. The input
level control, most often labeled gain or trim, should be set to zero.

Then, raise the channel input gain while receiving speaker’s voice at
normal levels until output meters show near zero decibels (dB).
This procedure, done for each input, can maximize your system’s clean output and leave headroom for adjustment. If input gain is too high, feedback is more likely; too low, and it can
cause noise. Once this setup is done, additional adjustments to
increase headroom and control source dynamics can be made using EQ and
compression to boost the channel’s signal-to-noise ratio. Read entire article
